Remembering Bou Meng, Mary Heilmann, and Kumantjayi (Walala) Tjapaltjarri

In Memoriam is a weekly publication dedicated to honoring individuals who recently passed away in the art world. This week's honorees include Bou Meng, Mary Heilmann, Kumantjayi (Walala) Tjapaltjarri, and several other notable artists.

Bou Meng, a Cambodian painter, survived the Khmer Rouge and was one of seven people known to have lived through the Khmer Rouge torture center in Cambodia. He painted propaganda portraits of leaders like Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, and Kim Il Sung. Bou Meng made significant contributions to seeking justice for the victims of the Pol Pot genocide, with his death marking the loss of an important historical witness to the crimes committed against the Cambodian people.

Mary Heilmann was an abstract artist who gained recognition in her 60s when she began creating her signature boxy plywood chairs. She received solo shows and retrospectives at prestigious institutions like the New Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Whitechapel Gallery in London. Her work has also been exhibited in various other galleries across the world.

Kumantjayi (Walala) Tjapaltjarri was an Australian Aboriginal painter from the Papunya Tula cooperative. His paintings depict subjects such as the Tingari Cycle, an Aboriginal epic, and he was a member of the Pintupi Nine, a group of Indigenous nomads who made contact with settler society in 1984. Kumantjayi's work is held in notable international collections, including those of Steve Martin and Beyoncé.

Patrick Vilaire was a Haitian sculptor, painter, and ceramicist who explored themes of power, memory, oppression, death, and Vodou in his art. He received recognition from the French government, including being named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1991 and receiving the Édouard Glissant Prize in 2010.
