No Malaysians reported affected by mudslides in northern Chile, says Malaysian rep in Santiago

SANTIAGO (Chile), Aug 19 — The Malaysian embassy in Santiago reports that no Malaysians have been affected or involved in the mudslides caused by heavy rain in northern Chile since mid-August. As of August 19, the embassy has registered 49 Malaysians, and it continues to monitor the situation. Heavy rain hit the Atacama and Antofagasta regions, resulting in mudslides and inundation of residential areas, particularly in Tocopilla, Antofagasta.

Chilean authorities have evacuated residents in high-risk areas and declared an emergency state for Tocopilla. A total of 64 people have been affected, 521 placed in evacuation centers, and three injured. Malaysians in Chile are advised to stay vigilant, follow safety instructions, and avoid visiting the affected areas unless necessary. The embassy will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates to the Malaysian government.
