NIA clarifies Ghana card fees, says prestige centre is optional

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has clarified that the recent changes to Ghana Card fees were not introduced by the Authority without parliamentary approval. The revised fees, which came into effect on February 2, 2026, were approved under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I.

2512), in accordance with the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080). The NIA assured the public that its 276 district offices remain fully operational, continuing to offer Ghana Card registration and related services. Firstly-time registrations for individuals under 25 years are still provided at no cost at the district offices, while those aged 25 and above are required to pay a GH¢30 processing fee.

The cost to replace a card is GH¢200, while updating records remains free. The Authority also clarified that the 24-hour Prestige Centre at Labone is an optional service, distinct from the regular NIA offices, and is not meant to replace them. This premium service, which began operations on August 1, 2026, operates around the clock, including weekends, and offers faster service for those who opt for it.

The NIA emphasized that the use of the Prestige Centre is not mandatory and that individuals can continue to access all required Ghana Card services at their usual district offices. The Authority urged media organizations, commentators, and the public to verify information regarding Ghana Card fees and services before disseminating it, as accurate information is crucial to avoid confusion and unnecessary concern.
