NERC transfers Akwa Ibom power sector oversight to state regulator

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has transferred regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Akwa Ibom State to the newly established Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC). This move is part of the ongoing decentralization of Nigeria's power sector, in line with the amendments to the Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023.

As a result, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company Plc will establish a subsidiary, PHEDC SubCo, to handle electricity supply and distribution within Akwa Ibom State. The transition is expected to be completed by February 17, 2027, with AKSERC becoming the primary regulator of electricity activities within the state, while NERC will continue to regulate interstate and international electricity operations.
