Money laundering charge took toll on reputation and family, Shahrir tells court

Former Johor Bahru MP Shahrir Samad claimed during a recent court appearance that the money laundering charge brought against him severely harmed his reputation and strained his family, as he battled to care for his critically ill daughter who had passed away shortly after his acquittal. The charge led to his name and photograph being linked to the term "money laundering," which Shahrir argued created the impression that he was dishonest.

As a politician, he explained that criticism of his political views differed significantly from accusations of money laundering. Shahrir's wife and his late daughter had to witness the accusations against him, both providing emotional support but also experiencing the associated pressure and embarrassment. He was giving testimony in his RM10 million lawsuit against former attorney-general Tommy Thomas, former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Latheefa Koya, and the government, alleging malicious prosecution and misfeasance in public office.
