Mets’ Polanco headed for ankle surgery after forgettable season

New York Mets infielder Jorge Polanco has undergone left ankle bursitis surgery following a disappointing season. Interim manager Andy Green revealed that Polanco's painful ankle made it impossible to continue playing, despite his best efforts. The 32-year-old signed a two-year, $40 million deal in December, hoping to replace the recently departed Pete Alonso at first base.

However, Polanco's struggles included only two starts at first base due to his bursitis in the left Achilles tendon. Batted just .127 in 23 games since returning to action on July 7, Polanco has struggled with back, knee, and hamstring injuries since 2018. Despite his recent performance, Green expects Polanco to resume baseball activities in time for the 2023 spring training season.
