Meta’s AI assistant finally lands on Mac, but it has some catching up to do

Meta has introduced its Meta AI assistant to the Mac platform through a dedicated desktop app, allowing users to engage with this AI chatbot alongside their existing browser tabs. The application offers a range of functionalities, including the ability to analyze shared windows, answer questions about screen content, generate content, and accept voice dictation across macOS.

One of the most intriguing features of the Mac app is its capability to interpret a shared window as context, enabling users to ask Meta AI about elements on the screen, receive suggestions, or have it assist in content creation based on what is visible. Additionally, the app supports dictation across applications, making it a more versatile desktop assistant than just being accessible through a browser tab.

Meta intends this application primarily for creators and small businesses, with the AI assistant capable of connecting with Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta advertising campaigns, and Google Workspace. This integration allows the AI to analyze metrics such as post reach, likes, shares, and saves, suggest content ideas, and even create presentations, documents, and spreadsheets.

It can also manage recurring tasks like weekly performance summaries. However, Mac users already have numerous AI assistants to choose from, and Meta's first desktop effort appears more like catching up rather than surpassing its competitors. While Gemini can already work with shared screen content, ChatGPT and Claude provide deeper computer-control features enabling interaction with the Mac.

Meta might still find a useful niche by integrating its assistant directly with Instagram, Facebook, and its advertising tools, primarily catering to creators and businesses. For now, Meta AI's Mac app seems more like a promising initial step rather than a must-have assistant. Meta has hinted at additional capabilities in the pipeline, which could significantly enhance its usefulness over time.

The primary challenge lies in convincing Mac users that they require another AI assistant on their desktop. With countless reminders flooding in via long email threads or busy lives, it's easy to overlook important follow-ups. A new AI-powered email app called Avec, built around swipe gestures and voice dictation, has recently addressed this issue and may be the app's smartest addition yet.
