LAWMA, police join forces to tackle illegal waste dumping, dumpsite encroachment in Lagos

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Police Command have joined forces to combat illegal waste dumping, dumpsite encroachment, and related environmental offenses across the state. Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA's Managing Director and CEO, made this announcement during a visit to the Lagos State Police Command.

Gbadegesin highlighted the rapid growth of Lagos' population, which has increased the volume of waste generated daily, ranging from 13,000 to 16,000 tonnes. He emphasized that this surge necessitates intensified waste management efforts, bolstered by effective enforcement and cooperation among relevant government agencies.

Gbadegesin expressed concerns over the safety of LAWMA personnel, including enforcement officers and street sweepers, who have faced resistance and attacks from unauthorized parties, such as armed scavengers, while carrying out their duties. He emphasized the need for heightened security measures around LAWMA facilities, operational locations, and areas prone to illegal activities to ensure effective waste management operations.

Lagos State Police Commissioner, CP Tijani Fatai, acknowledged LAWMA's crucial role in maintaining a clean and sustainable Lagos. He called for stronger enforcement, increased public awareness, and responsible behavior among residents to combat illegal dumping and other environmental violations. Fatai assured LAWMA of the police command's full cooperation in strengthening enforcement operations and addressing cases involving illegal dumping and encroachments.
