Latvian PM Criticizes EU For Softness Toward Russia, Demands Tough Decisions

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has harshly criticized the European Union for granting visas to Russians, including those involved in the war against Ukraine. In an interview with Politico, he demanded that the EU impose a complete ban and called for the return of €210 billion in frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. Kulbergs found it "madness" that Russian military personnel in combat operations can obtain visas and enter Europe.

He also criticized the idea of opening communication channels with the Kremlin, stating that such decisions should be made jointly by all EU countries. Kulbergs viewed any contacts with the Kremlin as a futile exercise, given the lack of genuine willingness on the part of Russian dictator Putin to negotiate. He argued that restoring relations is only possible if Moscow pays reparations and those responsible for war crimes are brought to justice, drawing parallels to post-war Germany. Latvia is prepared to provide its ports for the export of Ukrainian goods.
