Kyrgios provisionally suspended after testing positive for cocaine

Nick Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist and Australian tennis player, has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after testing positive for cocaine. The 31-year-old athlete provided a sample during an ATP tournament in Mallorca in June, which later tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

This substance is classified as a stimulant and banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Kyrgios was informed of the positive test on July 17, leading to his provisional suspension starting on August 4. While under suspension, Kyrgios is prohibited from participating in, coaching, or attending any events organized or sanctioned by major tennis organizations, including the ATP, WTA, Grand Slams, and national associations.

Following his announcement, Kyrgios expressed deep regret for his actions, apologizing to his fans, family, sponsors, and anyone close to him. He also acknowledged the negative impact on younger fans who look up to him as an example. Kyrgios, renowned for his powerful serve, has secured seven ATP singles titles and peaked at a world ranking of 13 in 2016.

However, he has faced multiple injuries that have hindered his performance since the 2022 Wimbledon final where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Currently ranked 919th in the world, Kyrgios has decided to take a break from social media and public life for 28 days to focus on his recovery. He plans to return stronger, stating, "I'm sorry, I'll do the work and come back better."
