Kenya safari helicopter crash: Seven killed including five Americans and Ecuador intelligence chief

Ecuador's intelligence chief, Michele Sensi-Contugi, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan, perished in a helicopter crash that occurred in Kenya on Wednesday morning. The accident claimed the lives of a total of seven individuals, including five Americans. The helicopter, operated by Lady Lori Helicopters, was on a scenic flight from the Loisaba wildlife conservancy to Ewaso Nyiro river, which traverses several national reserves.

Samburu County, where the crash took place, is a popular tourist destination known for its breathtaking landscapes and numerous private wildlife conservancies. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed the details of the incident. Ecuador's government expressed sorrow over the loss of Sensi-Contugi, who was appointed as the director general of the Strategic Intelligence Center in 2024.

Former President Guillermo Lasso confirmed the intelligence chief's death during the crash. Lady Lori Helicopters, the operator of the Eurocopter EC130 B4 aircraft involved, conveyed their deepest sympathies to the victims, their families, and all those affected. Among the five Americans killed was NBCUniversal journalist José Alberto Suárez, who was described as a "deeply respected leader and beloved friend and colleague" by the network.

Four other Americans have yet to be identified. This crash is not an isolated incident in Kenya, as previous helicopter crashes have resulted in the loss of lives, including a member of parliament in February and the military chief in 2024.
