Israel admits, for first time, IDF role in Hind Rajab's killing, opens criminal probe

According to officials, Israel's military has officially acknowledged for the first time that it opened fire on the vehicle carrying five-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab in January 2024. The Israeli military announced it will initiate internal investigations into its troops' involvement in her killing, alongside the deaths of 15 emergency and aid workers in March 2025.

The decision to probe the incidents came after a report from Israel's Fact-Finding and Assessment Mechanism. However, rights groups have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of such probes in leading to convictions. Initially, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied any involvement in Rajab's killing and cited a 'preliminary investigation' stating that its forces were not in close proximity to the vehicle or within firing range.

The military also dismissed any suspicion of criminal misconduct in the deaths of the seven aid workers. Dan Owen, a researcher with the Yesh Din rights organization, stated that in the past decade, only a tiny proportion of investigations led to indictments, and growing political pressure further hinders Israeli law-enforcement authorities from holding those responsible accountable, even when clear evidence exists.
