Is DCP-Wiper deal in the making? Gachagua’s Wamunyoro meeting sparks speculation

In a significant development for the upcoming 2027 General Election, Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua held a meeting with Wiper leaders at his Wamunyoro home on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The meeting sparked speculation about a potential partnership between Gachagua's DCP and Wiper, as Gachagua openly called for the two parties to form an early alliance before engaging other opposition parties.

"I want to ask for a partnership between the two parties, as we also engage others. The more the merrier," Gachagua stated. The meeting also saw Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, a close Kalonzo ally, expressing his support for the proposal. However, this is still an early stage in the negotiations, with no formal DCP-Wiper pact formally announced.

Gachagua also addressed the question of what would happen if he did not secure the presidential ticket, stating his intention to support the eventual opposition candidate and offer himself to lead the campaign once a nominee is selected. The Wamunyoro meeting is seen as a crucial step in building the opposition coalition, as it allows Gachagua and Wiper to establish a relationship and begin negotiating other positions, such as elective and parliamentary roles.

The wider opposition, however, remains united in their pursuit of a single presidential candidate, making the outcome of Gachagua's proposal uncertain.
