Huge mistake, says Nick Kyrgios after testing positive for cocaine

Nick Kyrgios, the seasoned Australian tennis player and former Wimbledon semifinalist, has been temporarily barred from competition following a positive test for cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on August 4 that Kyrgios tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, at an ATP 250 event in Mallorca in June.

Prohibited in competition, cocaine usage warrants a provisional suspension, during which Kyrgios is barred from participating in or attending ATP, WTA, Grand Slam, or other sanctioned tournaments.

In a lengthy statement shared on social media, Kyrgios, 31, admitted to the offence, describing it as "a huge mistake" and accepting full responsibility for his actions. Addressing his fans, family, sponsors, and young followers, Kyrgios expressed remorse, apologizing for his behavior. The tennis star also opened up about the physical and mental challenges posed by persistent injuries and the difficulty of acknowledging his potential career decline.

Despite his struggles, Kyrgios emphasized that his actions could not be excused, stating that he would not make any excuses. He requested privacy for himself and his family while stepping away from social media and public life for 28 days to focus on his well-being. Kyrgios concluded by expressing his intention to return to the sport stronger, encouraging players to be more open about mental health.
