Ghana School of Law SRC president-elect seeks special rewrite arrangement for students with outstanding papers

The incoming leader of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) at the Ghana School of Law, Isaac Nlason, has called for a special arrangement from the Independent Examinations Committee (IEC) to permit students with high marks to retake exams instead of having to repeat the entire academic year. This proposal is aimed at students impacted by the shift to a new legal education system and the impending end of the Professional Law Course (PLC) program.

In a letter dated August 17, 2026, addressed to IEC Chairperson Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Nlason requested that Part I students who fail more than two subjects be allowed to retake their failed papers rather than having to repeat the entire year. He also petitioned for Part II students who fail two subjects to be given the option to retake those specific papers instead of being forced to repeat the academic year.

The proposed allowance would apply to students currently enrolled in the PLC and Post Call Law Course programs. Nlason explained that this request was necessitated by the unique situation surrounding the introduction of the new legal education regime, which includes plans to discontinue the existing PLC program. While acknowledging the current examination rules, he emphasized that his petition was not intended to challenge or undermine the IEC's authority.

He stated that the request was meant to provide a compassionate response to the transitional challenges faced by the current law student cohort, while still upholding academic standards. Nlason outlined that Part II students who fail two subjects would be given the chance to retake those papers early enough to allow them to join their peers for the October Call to the Bar.

For Part I students, those who fail more than two subjects would be permitted to retake their exams, and upon successful completion, progress to Part II with their cohort. He stressed that the proposed measure was not an attempt to lower academic standards. Students granted this dispensation would still be held to the same examination standards, procedures, and requirements as other candidates.
