Fleet research links driver onboarding to higher safety tech adoption

Automotive research published on 19 August 2026 demonstrated commercial vehicle fleets using structured driver onboarding tripled operator adoption rates for onboard safety technologies

Sydney, August 19, 2026 - A recent study by Teletrac Navman reveals a strong correlation between comprehensive driver onboarding for safety technology and enhanced adoption rates. However, the quality of this onboarding varies widely across fleets. Drivers who feel adequately prepared are three times more likely to rate their coaching solutions as highly effective, yet 1 in 5 report minimal communication from management during installation.

Alain Samaha, CEO of Teletrac Navman, emphasizes that technology alone does not ensure safety outcomes; proper preparation does. Successful monitoring of technology requires a balance between fleet objectives and driver requirements, beginning with robust onboarding. Companies that prioritize this aspect tend to see improved results, including safer drivers, fewer claims, and greater retention.

Privacy concerns are a significant issue, with almost half of the surveyed drivers (45%) expressing distrust due to unclear data use policies. Nearly a third (30%) believe that clear evidence demonstrating the technology's protective role, rather than surveillance, would encourage them to remain with their current employer. Even after implementation, vague rules can leave drivers supportive of safety measures but wary of unfair enforcement.

Samaha stresses that transparency about data processing and management is crucial in rebuilding trust. Driver confidence increases significantly when they have clear visibility into their own data (47%), and when they appreciate fair and consistent data usage (43%). Practical access to driver apps, preferred by 60% of drivers, provides reassurance through always-on visibility and clear data usage rules.

Rewarding good driving is another key factor, with 37% citing recognition as a retention motivator. However, despite 99% receiving feedback, only 51% report positive recognition, while 32% face disciplinary action. Proactive feedback, such as performance breakdowns, boosts driving quality and workplace pride for 52% of drivers more than financial bonuses (21%).

Real-time in-cab coaching significantly reduces near misses, with 56% of drivers receiving such alerts experiencing them rarely, compared to 47% without. This difference underscores the importance of immediate behavior correction to prevent escalation and reduce claims. Accidents can affect both a driver's confidence and a business's financial health.

Over a third (38%) of drivers experience increased stress or anxiety following an incident, with 17% reporting a decline in confidence. Concerns about license loss (25%), disciplinary action (20%), and financial penalties (17%) are prevalent among drivers.

To ensure driver wellbeing and operational performance, selecting a safety system with real-time capabilities and fostering trust in it is essential. For more information, visit www.teletracnavman.com.
