FB, TikTok account for 92pct of scam content flagged for removal

As of today, 127,568 scam-related online content items have been flagged for removal, with Facebook and TikTok responsible for 53 per cent and 39 per cent of the flagged content, respectively. These platforms accounted for 53 per cent and 39 per cent of the total requests for content removal, while the remaining content was spread across other platforms, according to government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil during a post-cabinet meeting press conference.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, highlighted that fake accounts pose a significant problem in scam activities due to their ease of creation and rapid dissemination of false information. However, he emphasized that these statistics only represent reported cases, as the actual number of scam-related crimes might be higher.

The government has provided platforms like Sebenarnya.my and MyCheck to help the public verify information and encourages them to seek confirmation through mainstream media. Additionally, Fahmi announced that the government has issued and gazetted two codes - the Child Protection Code (CPC) and Risk Mitigation Code (RMC) - that social media platforms are required to comply with.

These codes give the platforms several months to implement coordinated measures to prevent harmful content that could threaten property or lives.
