Doctors Warn Parents Against Using Steroid Creams for Diaper Rash

Doctors and dermatologists are cautioning parents against using steroid creams to treat diaper rashes in children without professional advice, explaining that these creams can exacerbate fungal infections and lead to additional skin issues. At the inaugural Derma Summit Karachi, experts recommended zinc-based barrier creams as a safer alternative for uncomplicated diaper dermatitis, alongside frequent diaper changes and maintaining cleanliness and dryness of the affected region.

Professor Atiya Rehman highlighted the widespread misuse of topical steroids, urging parents to obtain a correct diagnosis before applying such medications. She referenced a case of a school-going child who suffered from recurrent skin lesions for nearly 18 months. Although a steroid-antifungal cream provided temporary relief, the lesions reappeared once treatment ceased, indicating the presence of tinea incognito, a fungal infection whose symptoms can be masked by steroids.

Professor Dr Mohsina Noor Ibrahim of the National Institute of Child Health emphasized that children should only use medicated creams prescribed by qualified doctors, stressing that steroids are not a universal remedy for every type of rash. Consultant Dermatologist Dr Aisha Ghayas noted that diaper dermatitis is prevalent due to the prolonged contact of urine, stool, and moisture with the skin, which can compromise its protective barrier.

She suggested zinc-based creams, petroleum jelly, and appropriate moisturizers as protective measures against irritants. Parents were advised to consult a medical professional if a rash persists for more than 48 hours or worsens. The experts also cautioned that steroid side effects can manifest more rapidly on the delicate and sensitive skin in the diaper area.
