DA launches ‘Get Joburg Working For All’ campaign as battle for city heats up

The Democratic Alliance (DA) launched its 'Get Joburg Working For All' campaign on Wednesday, following the release of its election manifesto. The campaign was unveiled in Orange Grove, with DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis, provincial leader Solly Msimanga, and mayoral candidate Helen Zille presenting the simple message. Hill-Lewis emphasized the campaign's focus on restoring infrastructure and basic services in the city, stating that it is not a grand, miraculous promise but a practical approach to improve the lives of Joburg residents who have suffered from poor management, corruption, and infrastructure decline.

The DA's campaign emphasizes clean government, responsible management of public funds, investment in essential infrastructure, and professional appointments in municipalities. Hill-Lewis also criticized the African National Congress (ANC), suggesting that the DA has the campaign trail largely to itself. He expressed hope that the ANC has given up on the city and hoped for a fresh start.

Helen Zille shared her personal reflection on the physical deterioration of Orange Grove, describing how the area has been "killed and destroyed." She remembered the vibrant community that once existed there and expressed concern that the decline had affected residents' pride in their city. Zille noted that the community has become resilient, accepting failing services and deteriorating infrastructure as the new norm, and forgetting what the city should look like when it functions properly.
