Congo’s Ebola outbreak reaches 5,000 cases as it outpaces response efforts at unprecedented speed

The Ebola outbreak in Congo has reached a staggering 5,000 cases, according to government data released on Wednesday. The situation is worsening rapidly, with responders warning that the virus is spreading alarmingly fast, outpacing efforts to control it in one of the country's most remote and challenging regions. As of Sunday, the outbreak had recorded 5,021 cases and 2,378 deaths, according to data from Congo's Ministry of Health.

The outbreak has proven to be the deadliest in history, infecting and killing more people in a shorter timeframe than any previous outbreak. Starting from the first detected case, it has spread about three times faster than the 2014 to 2016 West Africa outbreak, which was the deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, claiming over 11,000 lives.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed grave concern during a meeting convened by the agency on Tuesday. He stated that the epidemic is far from being under control and warned that the risk of further national and international spread remains high. The outbreak's rapid spread and the current safety concerns have severely limited the response, particularly in Ituri province, which has been the hardest hit by the outbreak.

Residents in the territory of Aru attacked a health team on Monday after a suspected case was reported there. In retaliation, the mob set fire to an ambulance and damaged two other vehicles, as reported by Michael Wani, president of the Union of Cultural Associations for the Development of Ituri.
