Competition Bureau seeks to block Nortera deal for Green Giant and Le Sieur brands

The Competition Bureau is seeking to block Nortera Foods' proposed acquisition of the Green Giant and Le Sieur brands from U.S.-based B&G Foods. Nortera Foods is Canada's leading processor of canned and frozen vegetables, having been the exclusive producer of these brands in the country for three decades. The Competition Bureau argues that merging Nortera with B&G Foods, its primary competitor, would result in increased prices, reduced choices, and diminished competition in the wholesale grocery supply for frozen and canned vegetables.

The bureau is requesting the Competition Tribunal to halt the transaction until a decision is rendered.
