Comcast gives its Wi-Fi motion detector a security makeover

Comcast has integrated its Wi-Fi-based intrusion detection system into the Xfinity Shield package, a collection of home security and cybersecurity features. Launched in 2025, the WiFi Motion technology uses the radio waves that permeate a home to sense movement and potential threats. By analyzing changes in the radio frequency signals between the Xfinity Gateway router and Wi-Fi-enabled devices, the system can instantly alert users via the Xfinity app when unusual activity is detected, without recording video or identifying individuals.

The system does not consider itself a security service but rather a feature, as it is not managed by a dedicated security provider. Not every device can support the sensing function; it requires the Xfinity Gateway, Xfinity Wi-Fi extenders, and up to three other stationary devices, such as thermostats or speakers. Users can adjust the sensitivity and even disable alerts for small pets or potential intruders weighing less than 40 pounds.

Comcast assures customers that the service does not track people or their movements and does not disclose any information to third parties, except in cases of law enforcement or court orders. While Comcast is the most recent company to employ Wi-Fi radio waves for motion detection, other firms like Cognitive Systems and Origin Wireless have been developing similar technologies for various applications, such as commercial occupancy monitoring and healthcare applications.

The 802.11bf standard for Wi-Fi sensing, ratified in 2025, is being implemented by major chipmakers and internet service providers, signaling the growing adoption of this technology in both residential and commercial settings.
