CM health insurance coverage increased from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh in Tamil Nadu
Chief Minister Vijay has announced a multi-super speciality hospital at Perambur, and the allocation of 674 crore for Cancer Care Mission
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced on August 19, 2026, a significant boost to health insurance coverage under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. The coverage, previously capped at ₹5 lakh, will now stretch to ₹25 lakh. This move aims to ensure that medical care is a basic right for all individuals, irrespective of their economic status.
In addition to expanding the insurance coverage, Vijay also unveiled plans for the construction of a 400-bed multi-super-speciality hospital in Perambur, his constituency, at a cost of ₹300 crore. The hospital will feature a ground floor and 14 upper floors.
To address the rising incidence of cancer, Vijay allocated ₹673.44 crore for upgrading the Chief Minister’s Cancer Care Mission. This funding will be used to build a cancer treatment section at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, featuring a ground floor and 14 upper floors. Additionally, regional cancer centers will be established at major medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, with the first phase focusing on the Madurai Rajaji Medical College.
The Chief Minister also announced the allocation of ₹106.17 crore for robotic surgery, Linear Accelerators (LINACs), modern equipment, targeted therapy, and other treatments in government medical college hospitals. A significant portion of this funding, ₹2.77 crore, will be dedicated to training doctors and providing nutritional supplements to patients.
Furthermore, Vijay highlighted the importance of nursing education in Tamil Nadu. As no new nursing colleges had been established since 2014, the government will create additional seats for nursing, pharmacy, and paramedical courses, amounting to ₹351 crore. This initiative will see the launch of seven nursing colleges, with 660 B.Sc. Nursing seats being created in existing colleges, along with 2,778 additional seats for physiotherapy and 735 seats for pharmacy courses.
