Bangkok’s Haroy debuts its Hat Yai fried chicken in Subang Jaya, eaten the Thai way with sticky rice, chili sauce and fried shallots

Subang Jaya buzzes with fried chicken shops, as the city’s residents love their comfort food. Haroy, a Subang Jaya SS15 establishment, is serving a unique twist on classic fried chicken — the Hat Yai variety. This dish boasts a lighter batter and spice marinade, providing a standout experience in the bustling Subang Jaya food scene.

Unlike traditional fried chicken with fries, coleslaw or mashed potatoes, Haroy’s Hat Yai offering is presented differently. It’s a wrap, filled with sticky rice, chicken pieces, and your choice of sauce (Thai basil flavor), all topped with fried shallots. The wrap is a delightful fusion of flavors — juicy meat, sweet-spicy chili sauce, and the soft, sticky rice. The addition of fried shallots adds a satisfying crunch.

For those not fond of sticky rice due to digestion, steamed jasmine rice or biryani rice are available for an extra fee. The combo sets come in two sizes, small and medium, with a one-piece chicken combo priced at RM16.90 and a two-piece combo for RM21.90. Both combos include the fried shallots, the rice or steamed jasmine, Haroy sauce (original or spicy), and a drink of your choice.

Thai Milk Tea (cha chak) can also be added for RM4.50, providing a cooling effect after indulging in the spicy chili sauce. Haroy’s wrap concept, wrapped in flattened sticky rice with four sauce choices (original Haroy sauce, nam tok, nam prik num, and pad kra pao), is a standout feature.

The fast-food-style outlet offers exceptional service, helping customers understand the proper Thai way of eating the fried chicken. Hat Yai fried chicken has previously been introduced by Ayee Southern Fried Thai Chicken in various locations, and Thai corner store 555 Thainanese Chicken also offers Hat Yai fried chicken alongside their Hainanese poached chicken. Haroy 72, located in Subang Jaya’s SS15, is open daily from 10am to 10pm.
