Australian tennis player suspended after testing positive for cocaine

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended following a positive cocaine test at an ATP tournament in Mallorca, Spain. The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced the suspension on Wednesday, confirming that Kyrgios had provided a sample during the ATP 250 event on June 22. The World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratory later verified the presence of benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, on July 17.

Kyrgios, 31, has been barred from playing, coaching, or attending sanctioned events since August 4. He can appeal the decision but did not do so at the time of the announcement. Kyrgios acknowledged the positive test on Instagram, expressing regret for his mistake and accepting responsibility. He apologized to his fans, family, sponsors, and young supporters, emphasizing that his struggles with injuries and mental health should not excuse his actions.

Under the suspension, Kyrgios cannot participate in any professional tennis activities until his case is resolved. The Australian, who has won seven ATP Tour singles titles and the 2022 Australian Open men's doubles title, plans to take a 28-day break from social media and public life to focus on his wellbeing.
