After weeks of rallying behind Fedorov, protesters reject his call for wartime elections in Ukraine

Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara recently detailed his three primary objectives for his tenure in office. Addressing the Verkhovna Rada ahead of his appointment vote on August 19, Khmara emphasized seizing strategic initiative in all war domains, ensuring timely weapons delivery to the front with transparent procurement procedures, and prioritizing human capital.

He stated that his priorities are of equal importance: strengthening the army, supporting the people, and developing the defense industry. Khmara highlighted the necessity of seizing the strategic initiative across land, sea, air, and information fronts, as well as maintaining rapid information exchange between the front and the ministry to accommodate soldiers’ needs.

He stressed the importance of transparent, efficient procurement free from bureaucratic hurdles that prioritize the front’s and Ukraine’s defense requirements. Additionally, human capital and the wellbeing of Ukrainian soldiers were identified as crucial priorities. Khmara aimed to foster communication with front-line soldiers and listeners, emphasizing the importance of respect, quality training, and fair conditions.

The Ukrainian legislature officially appointed Khmara as defense minister on August 19, following unanimous approval from the Verkhovna Rada’s defense committee. Amidst the appointment proceedings, protests took place outside the Verkhovna Rada, with supporters of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov chanting “Shame!” and pledging to continue their demonstrations.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented Khmara and FM Andrii Sybiha for the defense and foreign minister positions respectively to the Verkhovna Rada on August 18.
