Abuja Flooding: Wike Orders Immediate Demolition of Structures on Waterways

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate demolition of all structures built on floodways and drainage systems across Abuja, with no exceptions for high-profile individuals. During a visit to Maitama District, Wike stated that the administration would not tolerate any actions that violate the Abuja Master Plan or endanger residents, regardless of the property owner's status.

The FCT Department of Development Control will identify and dismantle illegal structures obstructing natural water passages within the next few days. Wike assured that the demolition would proceed regardless of whether it's before or after an election, emphasizing that past administrations' negligence towards structural violations would not prevent the FCTA from taking necessary corrective actions.

He also revealed that the FCTA is initiating immediate facility management operations to desilt blocked drainages and advance infrastructure projects like the Lokogoma road project to enhance flood resilience. Wike attributed the factors driving localized flooding to illegal construction on drainage routes, enforcement failures of building codes, and improper waste disposal blocking manholes and drainages.

He urged residents and stakeholders to take civic responsibility and adopt proper waste disposal habits to maintain clean, safe, and functioning drainage systems throughout the FCT. Wike debunked claims that the administration allocated land on water channels for estate developments, challenging anyone making such statements to provide concrete evidence and categorically denying the allegation.
