A Towering 182-Feet-Tall Statue in Rural Poland Is Now the Tallest Virgin Mary in All of Europe. Locals Hope It Will Become a Tourist Destination

In rural Poland, a towering statue of the Virgin Mary has emerged, standing an impressive 133 feet tall with its base adding another 49 feet. It is believed to be the tallest such monument in Europe and the second-tallest in the world. Located in Konotopie, central Poland, roughly 100 miles northwest of Warsaw, the statue was erected near a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, a popular pilgrimage site according to Vatican News' Paweł Rytel-Andrianik.

The Our Lady of Mercy statue was commissioned and funded by Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, who live nearby. Roman Karkosik is among Poland's wealthiest individuals, having amassed his fortune in manufacturing and investments. The statue, made of concrete and steel, cost approximately $26 million to erect.

The statue's unveiling was marked by a ceremony attended by Lech Wałęsa, a 1983 Nobel Peace Prize laureate for his nonviolent struggle for workers' rights and democracy in Poland. Wałęsa, now 82, expressed that this moment marked the end of his path, stating, "I started with the Virgin Mary and I end with the Virgin Mary."

The statue's crown-shaped pedestal, 49 feet tall, allows visitors to ascend to a terrace for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Konotopie's Our Lady of Mercy stands taller than both Christ the Redeemer and Christ the King, making it the tallest Virgin Mary monument in Europe. However, it is shorter than the Mother of All Asia – Tower of Peace in the Philippines, the world's tallest Virgin Mary monument.

The statue's height and central location in Poland, one of the most Catholic countries in Europe, could make it a significant tourist destination, according to the Diocese of Wloclawek's Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski.
