A maturity model for integrating large language models to address key challenges in software engineering education
Scientific Reports, Published online: 19 August 2026; doi:10.1038/s41598-026-65738-4 A maturity model for integrating large language models to address key challenges in software engineering education
The integration of Large Language Models (LLM) into Software Engineering Education (SEE) presents opportunities to tackle key challenges such as diverse student populations, rapid technological advancements, and resource limitations. To guide the effective incorporation of LLM in SEE, a multivocal maturity model is proposed. This model was developed through a multivocal literature review, empirical survey, and interpretive structural modeling.
The five maturity levels identified in the study encompass student engagement, technological advancements, practical skill development, and ethical considerations. The research aims to provide a systematic approach for educators and institutions to assess their readiness for implementing LLM in SEE and to continuously improve their practices for further innovation.
The study was supported by the University of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, under grant No. (UJ-23-DR-204), and the authors express their gratitude for the technical and financial support provided. The findings contribute to the growing body of research on leveraging AI in education and offer a novel framework for utilizing LLMs in the context of software engineering education.
