2,056 humanoid robots from 16 countries are set to participate in Beijing's World Humanoid Robot Games, marking the second edition of this robotics competition. The event, held from August 22-26 at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, showcases advancements in autonomy rules and more real-world industrial tasks. Over 2,000 of these robots will compete in 51 events and 1,301 matches, spanning five days, which is four times the number of robots at the inaugural 2025 event.

Organizers have increased the number of events from 26 to 51 and introduced new athletic competitions such as table tennis, weightlifting, long jump, and tug-of-war. Scenario-based events, which pose robots against nine simulated environments like hotels, factories, libraries, and retail centers, have also increased from six to 21. These additions aim to test robots' fine motor skills, including cable routing and tool assembly.

Despite the international participation, the competition remains heavily influenced by China, with 641 Chinese teams and robots from 157 companies and 200 research institutions and universities. The tightened autonomy rules, which ban remote control in most track and competitive events, aim to ensure true technical maturation. For instance, the 100-meter dash time limit has been reduced from three minutes to one.

According to Jiang Guangzhi, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, the games will help robots transition from competition arenas to real-world workplaces by mastering "last-meter" skills. This transition could result in medals turning into orders for robotics manufacturers.

The rise in autonomy thresholds and scenario-based tasks signifies a significant turning point for commercial robotics. For enterprise buyers, these high-profile competitions serve as stress tests for hardware durability, power efficiency, and spatial reasoning under unpredictable conditions. By tying scoring models to autonomy and practical execution, the games offer a public benchmark that helps enterprises distinguish viable commercial automation platforms from promotional prototypes.
