Young people expect AI to replace desired jobs within 5 years amid hiring slump

A recent survey conducted by the Federation of Korean Industries reveals that a significant majority of young job seekers and workers anticipate artificial intelligence (AI) will replace or reduce the need for their roles within the next five years. This study, which polled 1,000 individuals aged 19 to 34 who are employed or actively seeking employment, highlights deepening concerns about the impact of AI on the job market.

Of the respondents, 53.9% stated that AI would likely replace or scale back their current or desired occupations within the next five years. This perception was more pronounced among job seekers, at 63.8%, compared to employed respondents, who stood at 49.4%.

The study also found that certain sectors are more susceptible to AI-driven job loss. Office workers, managers, and professionals were the most likely to express concerns about their jobs being replaced by AI, with 58.4% expressing this concern, which is 12.6 percentage points higher than those working in manual labor and skilled agriculture, forestry, and fishing occupations. In industries where AI is prevalent, 54.5% of respondents indicated that AI would replace or reduce the need for workers.
