Winds hampering efforts to extinguish Belgian wildfire

Belgian firefighters are making a crucial attempt to encircle the nation's largest wildfire in a century, despite challenging weather conditions. The blaze, which has engulfed 3,000 hectares (7,500 acres) of peatlands, pine trees, and hiking trails, continues to pose a significant threat. Regional government spokesperson Nicolas Yernaux confirmed that efforts are underway to definitively encircle the fire today.

However, sustained winds and rain have hampered air support operations, grounding water-bombing aircraft from several countries.

Firefighters have been working tirelessly day and night to control the fire, focusing on linking up the eastern and northern fronts. Although progress has been made, a hard-to-reach section near the German border remains a concern. Residents in the border town of Monschau have already been evacuated due to smoke hazards. The smoke from the fire has reached as far as eastern France, prompting air-pollution alerts and triggering evacuations in some areas.

Belgium has faced a series of devastating wildfires this summer, fueled by dry conditions and a hot summer. The High Fens blaze occurred in an area previously ravaged by fires in 1911. Despite the challenges posed by the terrain and weather conditions, firefighters are optimistic about bringing the situation under control. They rely heavily on aerial assistance and have received support from local farmers and authorities. The fire's control may require several weeks of soaking and dousing efforts to prevent rekindling.
