Wildfire in British Columbia harmed 150 structures and forced 20,000 to evacuate

A wildfire in Western Canada destroyed or damaged around 150 structures, compelling more than 20,000 individuals to evacuate, officials revealed on Tuesday, providing the first comprehensive report on the damage. Approximately 2,200 residents remained under evacuation orders, while roughly 25,000 were under alert throughout British Columbia, stated Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene.

As conditions improved, most inhabitants of the heavily impacted Summerland began returning home. The Bald Range wildfire ignited on August 7 and advanced toward Summerland and nearby communities at such a rapid pace that certain crews were compelled to halt their firefighting efforts to assist in evacuations. The province declared a state of emergency the following day.

An 80-year-old woman lost her life. Premier David Eby expressed concern that the fire's speed might signify a "new normal" for British Columbia, calling for a review of preparedness measures for rapidly moving wildfires. Prolonged drought and extremely dry conditions significantly contributed to the fire's intensity. Around 40 of the affected structures are located in the city of Summerland, home to about 12,000 people in British Columbia's Okanagan region.

The remaining structures are spread across adjacent communities, such as Faulder, where several homes were left as mere blackened foundations. Graham Statt, chief administrative officer for the District of Summerland, cautioned that the count could increase as assessment teams inspect more properties. Authorities were reaching out to residents affected by the fire before releasing more detailed information publicly.

Some individuals will receive counseling. Summerland was evacuated alongside thousands of residents from surrounding areas, including Peachland.
