Wang Yi heads to Seoul as Trump cuts South Korea drills, opening door for China

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit Seoul, a move that comes just days after US President Donald Trump announced plans to reduce military exercises with South Korea. The decision has raised concerns among American allies in Asia, as it threatens to damage alliance coordination and provide China with an opportunity to weaken America's network of regional partnerships.

Trump's directive to scale back the military drills with South Korea was motivated by cost-saving considerations, a goodwill gesture towards North Korea, and dissatisfaction with Seoul's refusal to join the US in the war against Iran. However, his move has left regional partners, including the Philippines and Japan, feeling uneasy, as their frictions with China leave them particularly exposed.

The US undersecretary of defence for policy, Elbridge Colby, emphasized during his Southeast Asia tour that Washington was not disengaging from Asia but was instead "digging in" to maintain a favorable balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. He added that Washington aimed to prioritize burden-sharing, as allies were prepared to contribute more.

Experts predict that Beijing will exploit the scaled-back exercises as a tool to constrain Seoul's participation in the US alliance network and diminish America's military presence in the region. At the same time, China may intensify both its appeasement and pressure on South Korea under the pretext of fostering a favorable environment for US-North Korea dialogue.
