VC seeks govt support for private universities

Prof. Abiodun Adeniyi, the Vice-Chancellor of Baze University in Abuja, has urged the government to provide greater support for private universities in Nigeria. Adeniyi argues that private universities play a crucial role in nation-building, just like public institutions, and face significant financial pressures in maintaining quality education, infrastructure, and regulatory compliance.

He emphasizes that the cost of establishing and sustaining academic programs, recruiting qualified staff, and providing facilities is enormous, and the misconception that private universities are profit-making ventures is mistaken. Adeniyi stresses that private universities contribute to the Nigerian economy alongside public universities' graduates.

He calls for more government support, specifically from the TETFund, to strengthen the capacity of private universities to provide quality education and remain sustainable. Baze University, located in Abuja's central position, was established 15 years ago with the vision of redefining tertiary education in Nigeria and competing globally.

The university focuses on maintaining a conducive learning environment, keeping fees competitive, and strengthening academic standards through international partnerships and research initiatives. Adeniyi dismisses perceptions that Baze University is primarily an institution for politicians and highlights its diverse student population, including international students. He emphasizes that Baze University remains committed to Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.
