UN Afghanistan expert condemns ‘attack’ near Kabul school

KABUL: The United Nations expert on Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, harshly condemned a recent attack near a school in Kabul's western Dasht-e-Barchi area, which allegedly wounded a large number of children. Bennett emphasized the urgency for a comprehensive and independent investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The explosion took place on Monday, as the school was dismissing its pupils. According to a nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, some children inside the school courtyard sustained injuries, while others who had already left the premises were unharmed. Emergency services, including ambulances and cars, were seen transporting the wounded children away from the scene.

Kabul police informed AFP that a hand grenade explosion had occurred at the school, resulting in several children suffering minor injuries. The incident has triggered a response from security forces, who have surrounded the area. Another resident also spoke anonymously, describing the scene as being enveloped by security personnel.

In recent years, Kabul has witnessed sporadic attacks during the Taliban's rule, including a deadly explosion at a Chinese restaurant in January, which claimed at least seven lives. The Dasht-e-Barchi area has been particularly prone to violent incidents, with multiple blasts causing significant casualties. Notably, a 2021 car bomb outside a girls' school killed at least 90 people and left hundreds injured.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Shiites in the region, who they regard as heretics.
