Umno’s Awaludin returns as Negeri Sembilan assembly speaker

Umno's Awaludin Said, a four-term Kota assemblyman, has been appointed as the new Negeri Sembilan assembly speaker. The Umno member, aged 66, returned to the post he previously held from 2013 to 2018.

Awaludin was the sole candidate proposed for the position and took his oath of office before the legislature secretary, Amin Ludin, this morning, according to Bernama.

Prior to his tenure as Kota assemblyman from 2004 to 2023, he did not seek a fifth term. Currently, he serves as Rembau Umno deputy chief.

Two-term Paroi assemblyman Kamarol Ridzuan Zain of PAS was appointed as deputy speaker. The remaining 34 assemblymen were formally sworn in, bringing the total number of legislators to 36.

Rantau assemblyman Mohamad Hasan, who is also Rembau MP and currently the foreign minister, was absent as he was away on official business at the time.

In the state assembly, Barisan Nasional holds 18 seats, while Perikatan Nasional has seven, giving the latter pact a two-thirds majority. Pakatan Harapan holds the remaining 11 seats.
