UAE updates rules for Emiratis applying for scholarships to study abroad

The Ministry of Higher Education in the UAE has revised the criteria for Emirati students seeking government scholarships to pursue studies abroad. These new rules and regulations outline specific conditions and criteria for the national scholarship programme, including updated destination countries, institutions, and priority areas of study.

To be eligible for the government-sponsored scholarship, Emiratis must apply to an institution ranked within the top 50 globally for their chosen field of study. However, for scholarships to study in the United States or Australia, the university must rank within the top 100 globally for that specific subject. Emirati students interested in studying in other English-speaking countries, like the United Kingdom or Canada, must apply to institutions ranked in the global top 200 for their field.

Those applying to study in non-English speaking countries can apply for scholarships to institutions ranked globally in the top 300, along with the relevant subject area.

Priority will be given to students pursuing courses in key sectors such as energy, transport and logistics, technology and engineering, healthcare, water and the environment, creative industries, science, and finance. The resolution, passed by the Ministry, aims to create a more efficient and sustainable scholarship system that focuses on strong governance, high-quality outcomes, and optimal investment in people.

The updated framework also sets guidelines for the rights and obligations of scholarship students. This includes maintaining regular academic progress, upholding the UAE's reputation, disclosing any additional benefits or scholarships, and notifying the Ministry of any developments that may impact their academic journey. Emirati scholarship recipients will also have access to training and research opportunities relevant to their fields of study, as well as potential joint academic programs or academic cooperation agreements with other institutions.

The new rules are expected to strengthen the role of educational and science and technology missions and offices in managing the academic, administrative, and financial affairs of scholarship students while providing necessary support throughout their scholarship period. Additionally, these measures will enhance partnerships with leading global higher education institutions, further bolstering the UAE's development objectives and global competitiveness.
