Two students killed in shooting at Philippine high school

ZAMBONGA CITY, The Philippines — On 18 August 2026, a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines left two students dead, according to authorities. The incident occurred at a campus managed by Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City. Mayor Kimerer Adan Olaso informed local radio station DZMM that both victims were students and that one of them was the suspected gunman.

He utilized a high-powered firearm. Ateneo de Zamboanga University President Ernald Andal confirmed that the shooting had concluded, with no additional fatalities or injuries reported. He stated, "We can confirm that there are two fatalities and there is no longer an active shooter."

Andal emphasized the university's collaboration with authorities and their commitment to releasing further information once more details were confirmed. The university prioritizes the safety of its students above all else, according to Andal. This shooting marks the second school shooting in the country in just under two months.

In June, a public high school in Tacloban witnessed an attack where at least three students were killed and approximately 20 others sustained injuries after two students opened fire inside the school.
