President Trump is reportedly seeking to arrange a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as early as this fall, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The president has privately discussed organizing a face-to-face discussion with Kim during an upcoming trip to Asia, the WSJ claims. The meeting could potentially occur in November when world leaders convene for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China.

No formal planning has been initiated for the meeting, the report notes. Although Trump has consistently sought dialogue with Kim, particularly during a high-profile summit in Trump's first term, most U.S. presidents have declined to meet with Kim without preconditions. Kim is known for his dictatorial rule and the expansion of North Korea's nuclear arsenal over the past decade.

Trump believes a direct meeting could reignite talks with North Korea. The WSJ report follows Trump's announcement that the U.S. plans to significantly reduce military drills with South Korea.
