Trump shared a map graphic on Truth Social, his owned platform, and the official White House account on X, marking the narrow passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in blue and labeling it "NEW U.S. Territory".

The move follows Trump's earlier remarks about declaring the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory after defeating Iran. At a New York State political rally, Trump stated, "After we finish defeating Iran... I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States." He also described the idea as "a great idea" and "an excellent idea", emphasizing the US naval presence and blockade in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital energy chokepoint, through which about 20 percent of global oil and gas typically passes. The latest development follows an ongoing standoff between the US and Iran over the waterway, with Iran restricting access while the US Navy maintains a blockade of Iranian ports. Iranian officials have rejected claims of U.S. territorial control, insisting the strait will stay closed or under Iranian authority until the US lifts the blockade, eases sanctions, and meets other demands.
