‘That goal changed my life,’ Okocha recalls iconic solo strike against Oliver Kahn

Former Super Eagles captain Augustine Okocha, known as JJ, recounted the impact a memorable solo goal against ex-Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn had on his career during his time at Eintracht Frankfurt. Okocha highlighted the moment when he outwitted Kahn, recalling it as the point he first gained international recognition beyond Germany.

Speaking on the Obi-Wan podcast, Okocha reminisced about Kahn's stellar season at the time, just before his transfer to Bayern Munich. Despite the goal's viral nature before the era of social media, it garnered extensive television coverage across Europe and remains one of his career-defining highlights. Okocha, emphasizing the significance of that goal, stated, "That goal changed my life.

That was when I gained recognition outside Germany." The goal was extensively replayed on European television, even though it occurred prior to the rise of social media. Okocha explained that he held onto the ball longer than usual before shooting, not attempting to outdo Kahn but rather searching for the perfect opportunity to score.

His then Frankfurt manager jokingly remarked that his place at the club hinged on the goal's success. Okocha revealed that he has met Kahn, but refrained from discussing the goal due to Kahn's gruff personality.
