Spurt in influenza-like illness among children in Bengaluru; H1N1 cases reported

Influenza-like illness among children is on the rise in Bengaluru, with doctors reporting a significant increase in cases. While many children are being tested, primarily those with severe or persistent symptoms, the overall burden of the illness remains unclear due to limited testing. Pediatricians warn that children, especially those under five and those with pre-existing conditions like asthma, heart disease, or weakened immunity, are particularly vulnerable to complications such as pneumonia, respiratory distress, and dehydration.

Symptoms include fever, cough, cold, vomiting, diarrhoea, and in some cases, myositis causing muscle pain. Health experts advise close monitoring for severe symptoms and recommend annual influenza vaccination, particularly for young children and high-risk groups. They also stress the importance of hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, and ensuring adequate ventilation in classrooms and homes.
