Shakira Arrives in Colombia’s Choco to Help Earthquake Victims

Shakira visited the Colombian department of Choco, one of the poorest and most affected by the recent earthquake, to personally assess the needs of the affected families and witness the disaster firsthand. Accompanied by American philanthropist Howard Buffett, the singer arrived in Quibdo, the capital of Choco, one week after the earthquake struck. Shakira's visit is particularly significant due to her commitment to education and social work.

Upon her arrival, Shakira met with local children and authorities, including Choco Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba, at the Carrasquilla Industrial Technological School, one of the main educational institutions in the department. In Quibdo, she announced plans to build ten schools and reconstruct the University of Choco. Shakira's presence comes as Choco continues to grapple with the aftermath of an emergency that has impacted thousands of residents, with at least 13 people reported dead and around 1,300 homes damaged.

American philanthropist Howard Buffett, a longtime supporter of social and infrastructure projects in Colombia, traveled with Shakira to provide humanitarian aid and reconstruction assistance. Buffett has supported the Pies Descalzos Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Shakira in 2008, which focuses on education and social work in Colombia.

During her visit, Shakira emphasized the need to continue supporting the affected communities and highlighted the importance of long-term commitment. She expressed her love for Choco and her intention to remain with its residents during this difficult time. Additionally, Shakira announced that she had raised $1 million through Live Nation, her music partner, to help rebuild schools affected by the earthquake.

The funds will be allocated to the restoration of educational institutions, with an additional $500,000 contributed by Live Nation.
