Seoul in close consultation with US over combined military exercises: security adviser

South Korea has been engaging in close coordination with the United States regarding their shared military exercises, according to National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac. Wi's comments follow President Donald Trump's decision to significantly cut back on joint military drills with Seoul. Many in South Korea see this move as a gesture towards dialogue with North Korea, but also worry it may hinder Seoul's progress in regaining full operational control of its troops from the United States.

Despite the strong alliance between the two nations, Wi told reporters that their governments have been maintaining communication and coordination on combined exercises and drills between South Korea and the United States. South Korea is also making efforts to bolster its own defense capabilities, as Trump's directive has raised concerns that reduced joint military exercises could impede the assessment of the South Korean military's operational capabilities, which are crucial for advancing their defense objectives.
