Auto transport fraud is on the rise, but Central Dispatch is taking action with advanced biometrics and a new Secure Vehicle Transfer process. Lainey Sibble, AVP at Cox Automotive, explains how their platform is using biometric identity verification and multi-layered security measures to prevent vehicle theft during pickup and transit.
Central Dispatch, owned by Cox Automotive, now lists over 20 million vehicles, the largest auto transportation marketplace in the country. However, the vehicle release process has historically relied on paper documents, phone calls, and inconsistent procedures, making it vulnerable to fraudsters. The new Secure Vehicle Transfer system addresses this issue by requiring a non-transferable, geofenced digital credential for a carrier to pick up a vehicle.
The credential can only be accessed within a certain distance of the pickup location and is scanned upon authorization. This process is designed to take about 90 seconds and is the second phase of a broader security initiative. The first phase focused on biometric identity verification for platform access. Central Dispatch is also implementing a carrier scorecard and real-time tracking for carriers, in addition to an AI-driven pricing tool.
While the technology is crucial, Sibble emphasizes the need for industry-wide behavior change to ensure successful implementation and prevent vehicle theft.
