Premier League to publish referee, VAR explanations after matches

The Premier League will provide more transparency to fans by publishing referee and VAR explanations after matches starting from the 2026/27 season. This includes direct quotes from on-field officials and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in selected incidents where the explanation can clarify the decision-making process. The Premier League Match Centre on X and the new dedicated page on the Premier League website and app will feature these communications.

Additionally, Ref Cam, which provides a referee's perspective, will now include audio for selected incidents, enhancing the viewer's understanding of match events. The league's Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel, introduced in 2022/23, will also publish weekly assessments of key decisions on their website and app, ensuring greater transparency.

Howard Webb, Pro Ref's Chief Refereeing Officer, will continue his role in the "Match Officials Mic'd Up" programme, which features full on-field and VAR audio from selected incidents, along with Webb's analysis. Efforts to increase the broadcast of match officials' communications during live matches are ongoing, with the International Football Association Board (IFAB) being lobbied for more flexibility.
