Penn State frat pledges forced to cut and bag cocaine for college drug ring, authorities say

Two Pennsylvania State University fraternities, Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon, were the primary suppliers in a cocaine trafficking ring, according to authorities. The two fraternities were responsible for making regular trips to Philadelphia and New York to acquire large quantities of cocaine, which was then packaged and distributed mainly to Penn State students, reported the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office.

Some pledges were indoctrinated into the operation by participating in tasks such as cutting and bagging the cocaine, stated Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday during a news conference. The operation was classified as an upper-level trafficking organization in the region, emphasizing Sunday. The case involves a total of 14 defendants, with 13 of them being students at or around the time of the alleged crimes in 2023 and 2024.

Four of the defendants are current students, while four face charges including felony corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and other offenses. Eight other defendants are charged with misdemeanor counts such as possession. One defendant, who is a parent of a student, is accused of tampering with evidence and hindering the investigation.

Penn State University announced that Delta Upsilon is placed on interim suspension while the college investigates the incident. The international fraternity Sigma Chi, which is not recognized and operates outside of Penn State's oversight, expelled or suspended any members involved who did not resign. Penn State and Delta Upsilon are expected to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, according to their respective statements.
