Panvel Municipal Corporation Launches Bamboo Skill Training Programme To Empower Women With Self-Employment Opportunities

Panvel Municipal Corporation has introduced a ward-wise bamboo skill development training program to empower women and girls with the ability to create traditional and modern bamboo products, thereby providing self-employment opportunities. The initiative, spearheaded by PMC’s Women and Child Welfare Department, was launched on Monday at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan in Kalamboli by Committee Chairperson Mamta Pritam Mhatre, alongside civic officials and dignitaries.

Mhatre encouraged more women to enroll in the training to establish home-based businesses, small-scale enterprises, and other self-employment ventures, thereby generating additional income. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mangala Malve outlined the program and discussed various schemes implemented by the department, including the bamboo policy, the significance of the bamboo industry, and the emerging employment opportunities in the sector.

Maya Sawant of DSS World emphasized the importance of reducing plastic usage and promoting bamboo as an eco-friendly alternative. The month-long training program will offer hands-on training in creating a variety of bamboo products, such as coffee mugs, fruit baskets, tea trays, lamps, decorative flowers, kitchen sets, table mats, and pockets.

Asawari Yevtekar, DSS World’s director, showcased and displayed various bamboo products, underscoring the market potential of these eco-friendly items.
