OpenAI unveils ChatGPT for Teens with stronger guardrails to tackle safety risks

On August 18, OpenAI unveiled a new version of ChatGPT specifically designed for teenagers, complete with enhanced safety measures to address the risks associated with AI chatbots. The new ChatGPT for Teens mode will restrict conversations on high-risk topics such as self-harm, violence and eating disorders, while providing educational resources to assist students rather than merely providing answers.

When a user appears to be under 18 or self-identifies as being between 13 and 17 years old, the system will automatically engage and allow parents to set quiet hours, manage settings and receive notifications about sensitive topic discussions. This move comes in line with other tech giants like Meta, who have also stepped up protections for teens online due to mounting legal challenges and evidence of mental health issues.

As countries worldwide push for bans on social media for minors, OpenAI faces increased pressure to ensure the safety of its younger users. With the rise of chatbots that can converse like humans and be perceived as confidants, experts warn that relying on automation for mental health advice can be dangerous. OpenAI aims to leverage AI to expand educational opportunities, offering features like study mode, homework reminders, quizzes and visualizations to support learning outside the classroom.

The company estimates users' ages using a combination of age self-reporting, behavioral signals and account verification, defaulting to a more conservative setting when uncertain.
